Organ & Keyboard Cavalcade Review
I received this CD at the same time as John’s “Amigo” release, but space was tight last issue so the review didn’t make it in the magazine. As it was produced alongside “Amigo” you would think it would have a similar sound, but you could not be more wrong. Even though this one still features the Wersi’s Helios W2S & Spectra CD700 Golden Gate and the Yamaha Tyros 2, the whole feel of the CD is completely different, which is some achievement. This one has the definite ‘Wersi Sound’ featured on many of John’s previous releases, while still keeping the flavour of the original tracks which, as the title suggests, are all classic pop songs recorded by the worlds top female artistes, from Shirley Bassey to Adele and Alma Cogan to Katy Perry and Beyoncé. Just a point, but these two new releases take Mr. Kyffin’s output to seventeen CDs in just over three years and if you think that means a lack of originality or effort, then think again (or buy these two releases).
Now the CD kicks off with the Shirley Bassey / Pink track “Get This Party Started”, which has now become my favourite track from any keyboard CD of 2014. In fact, I think this whole release is a definite contender for my CD of the year (if such a prestigious award actually existed outside of my own head).
The sound of the Wersi’s do really lift some of the (already impressive) tracks. Celine Dion’s “All By Myself” is a good case in point. It’s a five minute track which gradually builds from piano and strings to a full-on arrangement, but just when you think it has nowhere left to go, the Wersi comes in forty-five seconds from the end to give it some serious “Oompf”. This one is the song that keeps on giving.
Other tracks have more of the Wersi sound, including Kate Bush’s “Babooshka” and Cilla Black’s “You’re My World” which have the Wersi treatment in the choruses and “River Deep Mountain High”, which is fully Wersi-fied throughout.
This is another great release from John and I would like to see a volume two of this one, although I suppose an obvious choice would be “Golden Boys”.
Highlights include, “Get This Party Started”, “Babooshka”, “Baby Love”, “Move Over Darling”, “River Deep Mountain High”, “Close to You” and the Barbra Streisand medley.
