Original Text from the 1998 Cassette Release (AC236):
DOREEN CHADWICK has long been recognised as one of this country’s foremost theatre organists, ever since she was engaged on both the Granada and ABC Circuits in the 1940s, but she is deservedly equally renowned these days for her performances on the Hammond electronic organ.
Her first encounter with a Hammond was in 1950, when she took over from Ena Baga at Lyons Corner House, Tottenham Court Road, on the famous C3 model.
Doreen played a Hammond organ in the Market Hotel, Oldham, after moving north in 1952, and had several Hammonds during the many years she and her husband ran the Magnet Hotel at Oldham. The organ was very popular with customers and Doreen was able to play most kinds of music on it – from Latin American to ballads; from popular standards to overtures; from rags to light classics. Indeed, the wide range of music on this CD demonstrates how versatile both the organist and the instrument are.
In 1962 she had a most enlightening visit to the Hammond organ factory in Chicago, where she was shown how to get the very best from the drawbar system. Doreen continues her long association with Hammonds, which she admits are her favourite electronic instruments.
One of the finest examples of Hammond is the C3 which is owned by the Scarborough Electronic Organ Society, and often used in their many concerts each year, to which visitors are most welcome. Doreen has been featured several times and very much enjoys playing this special instrument, a pleasure which it is hoped you will share.
