Organ and Keyboard Cavalcade Review by Ian King
At the end of 2014 we had four more CDs which nearly complete our whole back-catalogue from John Kyffin (only four more to go), the titles are; “Merry Christmas” (2005), “Music Of The Keys” and “At Your Request 1” (both 2008), plus “Here Comes The Sun 1” (2010). As with all of John’s CDs, they are competitively priced at £7.95 each.
“Merry Christmas” consists of a selection of Christmas tunes and carols. A few of these tracks re-appear on his 2013 “Christmas Cracker” CD which he made eight years after this one, although most of them are updated and do sound different. “Music Of The Keys” contains a lovely mix of tunes which are mainly played on the Yamaha Tyros 2, with only a pinch of Wersi Spectra. There are some very intricate arrangements and rhythms too including, “O Mio Babbino Caro”, “The Pearl Fishers”, “Intermezzo” and “Under Paris Skies”. There are quite a few classical pieces, which is unusual for John.
“At Your Request” contains an unusual selection of ‘requested’ tunes, although I do notice that many of these are pretty obscure, so I am left wondering how many people requested “King Lover Reggae” or “Bagpipe Reggae”. I can only assume there was a large Jamaican contingent in the audience when he asked for requests that evening (plus one half-Scottish and half-Jamaican). Having said that, it’s all very entertaining, with the emphasis on complex arrangements and orchestral sounds (again mainly courtesy of the Tyros 2). The title states this is a volume one, but no volume two has appeared, so perhaps this was a short lived idea which was replaced with his other ‘themed’ volumes and his very popular “Here Comes The Sun” series of which we now have volume one to add to volumes five, six and seven already in stock (with volumes two, three and four to follow soon to complete this ‘library’). Volume one has much more of a Wersi-sound than the other CDs reviewed here and features pop songs of the 1970s and 1980s.
